World Cup Mania

Much like that of the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup comes around once every four years - giving futbol fans across the nation the main stage many think it deserves. I say "nation," because everywhere else in the world the sport is a RELIGION.

Sure, it's the red-headed stepchild to the REAL football in America, but the one Olympic-similarity that exists - beyond the fact that it's another platform that allows an otherwise overshadowed sport to rise to the forefront - is that it effortlessly brings the U.S. together in a way only a global sporting event can: undoubtedly unified. Seems like a contradiction, right? Hear me out...

The patriot in me always gets so sentimental when situations like this arise - it's just such a warm and fuzzy feeling that we miss out on with the NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB. Constantly divided, we are tried and true to represent our "hometown" teams to the fullest - and there is no argument that we all do this well! But on the global stage, we all join forces. And there is something truly amazing about just how well we do THAT  too.

Allegiances, sexuality and political beliefs aside, sporting events like the World Cup let us be what we were destined to be - simply, AMERICANS. Everyone is comfortable in their own skin and accepting of others in the same regard. Perhaps our priorities are actually put into complete perspective when we find ourselves leaving work early to meet our spouses and friends at the local establishment, only to find them alongside complete strangers - from all walks of life - yet in perfect harmony.

Not many things can seamlessly bridge a gap between so many conflicting principles, let alone allow us to drop work without hesitation and have a little fun. Sporting events that come around once every four years can...

 USA, USA, USA!
